A terrestrial diplomat causes an interplanetary incident when he kills an alien diplomat in a completely... unusual... manner. To avoid a declaration of war, the Earth government must find an equally unusual object: a type of sheep ('The Android's Dream') that is an integral part of the coronation ceremony of an alien race. The government turns to Harry Creek, a former police officer, war hero, and hacker of unprecedented skill. With the help of Brian Javny, a childhood friend whose personality and abilities are encoded in artificial intelligence, he searches the Earth to find this rare being. They find her in the form of Robin Baker, a completely insignificant pet shop owner. Her genetic makeup contains traces of the indispensable sheep's DNA. However, there are many others who have plans for the sheep: hired killers in the service of the military, followers of a secret religion based on the writings of a science fiction author, and alien races that are eagerly embarking on revolutionary changes and war against Earthlings on their planet. To prevent the final enslavement of our planet, Harry will have to perform one of the greatest diplomatic feats in history.
