Description
Shakespeare conceived the tragic love story of two giants of world history, the Roman general and the Egyptian queen, as a chamber drama of adulterous love set against the backdrop of a grand world. Aging lovers, whose personal desires clash with the overarching duties of rulers, appear somewhat ridiculous and imperfect when viewed in their private lives, but all the more human and credible. In this de facto last tragedy of Shakespeare, East and West, reason and passion, knightly foolish old age and predatory, ruthless youth stand opposed.
