Description
The Tempest is the pinnacle of Shakespeare's final period and belongs to the so-called romances. At the same time, according to many critics, it is also Shakespeare's last standalone play, as two others, possibly Henry VIII and most likely The Two Noble Kinsmen, were created in collaboration with John Fletcher. If we can estimate the story of the playwright's life against the backdrop of Shakespeare's plays featuring slowly aging heroes (from Romeo through Hamlet to Lear and Prospero), then from the initial search and maturation through the period of Renaissance faith in human abilities, the phase of growing doubts and painful skepticism, the aging author reaches wisdom and reconciliation with the world.
