Description
The most famous orator of ancient Greece, Demosthenes, had to exert considerable effort before achieving his fame. Sixty speeches, numerous letters, and guides for performances have survived under his name. Among the most famous speeches are On the Crown, Speeches Against Philip (the so-called Philippics), On Peace, and the Olynthian Speeches. The collection of 13 speeches included in this volume is unique in its nature - it represents the only surviving collection of speeches delivered in the assembly, known as demegoria. Demosthenes created and delivered them between 354 and 335 BC, during the rise of his political activity in the anti-Macedonian opposition. Despite several translation attempts in the past, the collection of Demosthenes' demegoria is published in full for the first time thanks to Prof. Dr. Pavel Oliva, who supplemented the translation with an extensive introduction and notes.
