Plutarch, the Greek philosopher and biographer, is one of the most prolific authors of antiquity, with an estimated 250 works to his name, fewer than half of which have survived. His extensive Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans are the best known, but his shorter works on philosophical, ethical and political subjects have also attracted considerable interest. This volume on political activity contains five essays addressing the contemporary problems of Plutarch’s era as well as fundamental questions of political morality: Political Advice, On Monarchy, Democracy and Oligarchy, To an Uneducated Ruler, Should an Old Man Engage in Politics?, and A Philosopher Should Converse Especially with Rulers.
