Description
Prof. Jan Gajdoš was an outstanding Sokol gymnast, world champion, Olympian, fighter against fascism, high school teacher, and coach. He was a significant and permanent member of the representative team of Sokol and the Czechoslovak Republic from 1925 to 1940. He was a straightforward, honest, upright, and brave man, just like those Sokol shaped during the so-called First Republic. He participated in hundreds of competitions in apparatus gymnastics at inter-Sokol and international events. He repeatedly represented the Czech Sokol community and the Czechoslovak Republic in various international competitions and world championships. He took part in two Summer Olympic Games and won a silver medal with his team in Amsterdam in 1928. In 1929, he spent one year with Sokol Plzeň Chicago in the USA. As an athlete, he placed first in the individual category at the II American Sokol Slet. Additionally, he served as a coach and wrote a performance piece for men, who also placed first in their category. He returned to the USA with the largest expedition of ČOS to date in 1933.
