Description
The Theory of Moral Sentiments is the foundation that provided Adam Smith with the ethical, philosophical, and methodological basis for his magnum opus, The Wealth of Nations – a book that rightfully made him the founder of economics. As individuals, we have a natural tendency to take care of ourselves. However, as social beings, Smith explains in this book, we are also endowed with empathy towards others. When we see others suffering or being happy, we feel with them – albeit not as strongly. Gradually, through our own experiences as well as those of others, which we observe from the perspective of an impartial spectator, we create a system of rules of behavior – morality. Morality is not something we need to calculate. It is natural, embedded in us as social beings. Freedom and nature, Smith argues, are certainly a more reliable guide to creating a harmonious, functioning society than the presumed reason of philosophers.
