Description
The book presents a representative overview of Staiger's (1908–1987) lifelong work. In addition to his most famous book, Basic Concepts of Poetics, the selection includes the author's programmatic studies and articles, his Zurich speech with subsequent polemical responses, as well as excerpts from correspondence and memories. The three sections of the book demonstrate Staiger's intellectual contribution in three important, interrelated areas: the first is a testament to Staiger's attempt to create an anthropologically grounded poetics, the second presents texts dedicated—primarily in dialogue with the philosophy of M. Heidegger—to the issue of literary hermeneutics, while the third includes texts defining Staiger's unique concept of style and addressing the question of aesthetic evaluation of literary works.
