Description
The stories of the Midnight Diary were written by Gertruda Goepfertová based on records of her dreams during the 1960s, a time when she was primarily caring for her own family. She could not dedicate herself to consistent writing at that time, but the recorded dreams were, as she says, "like finished little novels that got stuck in the mind, in memory like memories of a 'lived night.'" Their strength does not primarily lie in the events described within them. The confidence of the author's texts is justified by the way Goepfertová built a fictional text from fleeting dreams, addressing unreal images and situations matter-of-factly and with detachment. The fantastical nature of the events is a sober stylization, devoid of exaggeration, paradoxically underscored and highlighted.
