Description
It's Monday afternoon, the beginning of summer, the beginning of the twentieth century. Children are playing by the pond, and one of them nearly drowns. Little Lina will later marry Reinhard Heydrich, and small Karlíček will grow into a feared communist prosecutor. The other two girls, Terezka and Johanka, are destined for an ordinary life: love, marriage, children, joys, betrayals... and death, after which everything seems to begin anew. The novel flows like a river of time, and in its turbulent currents, the fates of people, families, and generations swirl. It takes place in several countries, featuring both real and fictional characters whose lives unexpectedly intertwine. Good and evil battle for the souls of the heroes not only in the tense moments of resistance against violence and totalitarianism but also in everyday life. A week longer than a century comes to an end; it is Sunday afternoon, the beginning of summer, and the beginning of the twenty-first century, children are playing by the pond, and one of them nearly drowns.
