Description
This publication is the fourth part of a long-term project by the Museum of the Capital City of Prague about Prague's districts. It presents a remarkable area of Prague in all its diversity and complexity. A relatively large number of photographs, postcards, and other iconographic materials related to the theme of urban development have been preserved, through which the reader will be acquainted with the city's evolution. With the book in hand, we can travel through time and space, from ancient times to the emergence of independent Vinohrady, from the time when there was only open land behind Prague's walls, used for viticulture and agriculture, with many independent homesteads, to the expansive development of the city. We can observe the development of the noble Prague district, related to the demolition of Prague's fortifications, to the emergence of a well-structured Prague neighborhood. It was built largely in a regulated manner, and new apartment buildings were inhabited mainly by the upper middle class of the population - from Prague, the nearest surroundings, and all of Bohemia. In a relatively short time, a largely regular network of airy streets emerged, including all the attributes of a new city: a church, a town hall, a theater, a community house, as well as recreational areas, hospitals, and a cemetery.
