Description
The publication is already the third volume of a long-term project by the Museum of the Capital City of Prague about the districts of Prague. It introduces the transformations of Žižkov in space and time: from a settlement with a few dozen inhabitants in the mid-19th century to a proud independent city with more than sixty thousand residents at the end of the 19th century, which became part of Greater Prague in 1922. The reader has the opportunity to embark on a figurative walk through Žižkov and, using numerous postcards and photographs, as well as plans, period advertisements, and short explanatory texts, moves through time and space, just as Žižkov itself grew and developed in the second half of the 19th century (the creation of new streets, the expansion of railway and tram transport, the establishment of a gasworks and power plant, the founding of schools). The book will bring closer the way of life of Žižkov's residents – living in tenement houses, which are very typical for Žižkov, the bustling activity in Žižkov's streets, which took place around shops, markets, small workshops, and numerous inns. Attention will also be paid to critical moments in Žižkov's history – mainly the demolition of parts of Žižkov in the 1970s and 1980s. Archaeological finds will not be overlooked either.
