Description
This fully illustrated travel book explores Yugra, Yamal, the Polar Urals and the Komi Republic, as well as Russia’s Far North, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug and the Western Arctic. The second volume of an eight-part series of literary, ethnographic and political travel writing about contemporary Russia, it offers a comprehensive account of a region inhabited by Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic peoples, including the Khanty, Mansi, Nenets, Selkups and Zyryans, or Komi, whose culture remains largely unknown in the Czech Republic. Alongside roughly 1,000 unique photographs, infographics and maps, the book presents local realities, landmarks, ethnography, mythology, spiritual and cultural traditions, and the everyday lives of the region’s peoples. It also combines the author’s personal experiences and impressions with informed commentary on historical, cultural and political contexts, including the effects of Stalinist terror and the GULAG camps, the history of colonisation and shipping in Siberia, and the local peoples’ struggle for freedom.
