Resisting Russia, defending its territory and independence – Chechnya has paid a heavy price for this. And the West was silent then, as it was convinced by Vladimir Putin that Chechens are terrorists and that a war of extermination is a necessity. Now we see mass graves, destroyed cities, torture, and rape once again. But Ukraine is still fighting. And on the Ukrainian side are those Chechens who refuse to accept that their nation should be represented by Putin's servant Ramzan Kadyrov. Reporter Irena Brežná, who closely followed the Chechen war, decided that someone must listen to the victims and try to pass the message on. Irena Brežná's reports provide testimony of Chechen suffering, but also of the indifference of Western countries and the sensationalism of the media. The Slovak exile published her texts in the most prestigious German and Swiss media, yet it took many more years for European politicians to understand that the Russian strategy does not change. Irena Brežná's writings are also unique in that they bring a female perspective and sensitivity to the reports. This allowed her to be accepted by Chechen women, and she truly learned what they experience and how they perceive the war that has destroyed their homes and families.
