Description

This Czech-language reportage book examines the sexual violence and protection of perpetrators in circles close to the Swedish Academy, a scandal that meant the Nobel Prize in Literature was not awarded in 2018 for the first time in 75 years. It is based on the investigative reports of Matilda Voss Gustavsson, who initially found the Swedish #MeToo scandal hard to believe. After hearing several testimonies, the young Swedish reporter decided to investigate further. Her aim was not only to expose Jean-Claude Arnault, a French photographer and prominent figure in Swedish culture, husband of the poet Katarina Frostenson, a member of the Swedish Academy. The couple ran the Forum cultural centre, whose grant funding also revealed an unmistakable conflict of interest. Gustavsson persuaded victims to speak out, despite women writers and artists fearing that no one would believe accusations against Arnault and that they would be shut out of the cultural world. The book presents an uncensored portrait of the backstage world of Swedish cultural life, especially the struggle for power and its abuse, including Arnault’s sense of impunity in committing sexual violence against women.
