Description

The preserved notes from the estate of the spouses Mária Jančová and František Hečko, which they kept from 1936 until 1960, when the prose writer passed away, have a diary-like character. In the period leading up to the end of the war, the dominant theme is the closest family circle, the upbringing and health of the children, especially the tragic illness of the younger son. The records that follow after 1948 reflect the ambivalent position of a talented and simultaneously official creator, a participant in literary life, but also a "public figure," a person who entered the "world" of writers relatively late and who never fully acclimated to this environment. His comments are primarily focused on the literary life of the 1950s. Hečko's diaries are primarily a story of a strong relationship between two people and the history of their family microcosm, but also a subjective, still interesting testimony about a quarter-century of cultural life in Slovakia.
