Exactly a year had passed since the murder of Cley Petresku. It was summer again, vacation time again, and people were looking forward to holidays and well-deserved rest by the water. No one in the homicide department was looking forward to it, and everyone was afraid to take a vacation request to the boss. It really wasn't a good time for idleness; there was more work than anyone could handle. The Beast period had arrived, and a man murdering older women right in their apartments was supplying a steady stream of new cases. In his shadow moved another man, and if it weren't for the fact that they worked during the same period, and if Ondřej-the-Beast hadn't been a bit more industrious, he too would have reaped the fame of the most prolific murderer in the history of Our City. He didn't. He slacked off and remained second. But even though he only murdered five women, he still wrote quite a nice story, and the boys from the old murder squad always talked about him whenever they met for a beer, nostalgically reminiscing about the old days. Krauz didn't reminisce; Krauz was furious because his boss had signed off on his vacation, and that's how it all actually began...
