This Czech-language fantasy novel follows Jošt Vaněvski after his first year at Brünburgu, when peace remains out of reach. The dramatic events in Světlodar return in his nightmares, the ghost Marcel is still on the run, and a spectre that was meant to be imprisoned forever disappears from the castle. Instead of an ordinary holiday, Jošt faces another investigation, this time searching not only for traces of the dead but also for memories hidden far too deeply. Bruno’s ill father, old books and the wandering boulder Eduard become part of the mystery, while the spiritist Dagon Levett finally discovers a clue to Marcel’s whereabouts and must travel to the very boundary between life and death. As Jošt and Bruno draw closer to the truth, it becomes clear that the great war did not end with the victory at Brünburg. Some secrets survive in the legacy of the dead, others in the memories of the living, and both come at a price.
