Description
The walls of Křivoklát Castle conceal what should have remained buried. The past has never completely fallen silent at Křivoklát. Its old walls remember kings, prisoners and executions, and sometimes the stone still seems to breathe with their memory. Historian Záviš Brieftrager arrives at the castle as an archivist with a single goal: to get back on his feet and disappear from civilization for a while. He soon discovers that his predecessor died under unclear circumstances and that a suspicious silence surrounds the entire matter. As he catalogues old books and manuscripts, connections begin to emerge linking the present with the bloody history of the Křivoklát forests. While working with seventeenth-century archival documents, Záviš also encounters the troubled fate of a Swedish soldier, Jan known as Stejskala, a man who became entangled in a fatal chain of events in his struggle to survive a ruthless era. Past crimes return to the surface, and Záviš gradually discovers that some traces did not disappear with their perpetrators. This is a gripping detective novel about guilt, memory and places that guard their secrets for centuries.
