Description

The gates were opened, and with them old wounds. At the end of the sixteenth century, southern Bohemia faces a double threat. The plague spreads through the region and towns close themselves to outsiders, while unknown attackers ambush the carriage of Petr Vok of Rožmberk. The attack fails, but leaves behind the dead, the wounded and a mysterious threatening message. Petr Vok therefore sends two men on the road: the experienced knight Jakub Jelínek of Hiršberg and the learned archivist Václav Březan. Their investigation takes them into a land of ponds, old grievances and unsettled scores. The plague reaches more and more towns, no one knows where it will appear next, and every journey is highly dangerous. The clues lead to the old “War of the Fishpond Builders”, an uprising that was bloodily suppressed, although its instigator, Ondra Borák, was never captured. Has Borák really returned to complete his revenge, or is someone exploiting the fear of the plague and old legends for personal gain? This Czech-language historical detective novel is set in golden Prague, a city of intrigue, crime and vice.
