Description

This Czech-language detective novel opens on a foggy September morning in 1962, when the accidental detective Ota Fink, a lathe operator in civilian life, wakes in the cabin of an abandoned houseboat by the shore of Libeň Island, beside the body of a brutally murdered man. He does not know how he got there, but he is certain that he will be the main suspect in the cold-blooded crime, so he becomes a fugitive. With no other choice, he sets out to find the killer himself. His determination is strengthened by the fact that he knew the dead man through the Karlín tramping group Modravé stíny, which also includes the beautiful Dženy, who has an almost supernatural influence over men. Soon another equally brutal murder takes place, and Ota himself was meant to be the victim. Why does the killer strike with a table leg? What role do Modravé stíny play in the whole affair? Is fragile Dženy the immediate cause of the cruel events, and is it all merely a trap intended to close around Ota?
