Description
Years after his father’s death, a writer and member of the Spanish community in Buenos Aires tries to uncover his true personality. Marcial Fernández, an emigrant from Asturias, finds it difficult to establish a deeper relationship with his son, as was common among many men of his generation. When he discovers his son’s passion for literature, he punishes him with years of silence and disapproval. The only bond between them remains the classic Hollywood films they watch together on television, a kind of indirect emotional education filled with hints and misunderstandings. As the narrator gradually delves into his father’s past, he finds traces suggesting that Marcial led a secret life and becomes obsessed with uncovering it. This exceptionally beautiful and painful novel is written with narrative assurance and, at times, an almost suspenseful quality. It pays tribute to Spanish emigrants and the films that shaped the identity of earlier generations, while also exploring hidden family secrets and the often complicated relationship between loving parents and their children.
