Description

This Czech-language true-crime account tells the story of the terrifying cult that led to the largest mass murder-suicide in modern history. In the 1950s, young Indianapolis preacher Jim Jones preached a gospel infused with Marxist ideas. His Peoples Temple congregation was racially integrated, and he himself was a highly respected leader in the contemporary civil rights movement. After moving his church to California, he entered politics and soon became a prominent community leader. Behind the polished, charismatic pastor’s façade, however, lay an unspeakable darkness that led to a tragedy in which hundreds of people were brought to their deaths. Investigative journalist Jeff Guinn traces Jones’s life from childhood and gradual radicalization through extramarital affairs, drug use and fraudulent faith healing to his decision to move his followers to a settlement in the jungle of Guyana, South America. Drawing on thousands of pages of FBI files, extensive original research, interviews with witnesses who had never previously spoken to anyone, and new testimony from massacre survivors, Guinn examines the events leading to 18 November 1978, when more than 900 people, including nearly 300 children, died after being ordered to drink a cyanide-laced beverage. This is the eighth book in the orange true-crime series and a comprehensive study of one of the most destructive cults of the modern era. The book was nominated for an Edgar Award in 2018 and for the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Biography in 2017.
