Venice is a city supported by foundations, a city standing on water, and this book is for those who love it and want to lose themselves in it even more, as well as for those who dislike it but may have judged it too quickly. Short introductory sketches lead through a lagoon where history sleeps in the streets, buildings are filled with memories, the sea is served on plates and people speak the Venetian dialect. Five routes present both postcard sights and places waiting to be discovered: cafés frequented by locals, the last boatyard where gondolas are still built, a bar from which Casanova once disappeared through the back exit, arcades, the world’s largest canvas, and the sounds Vivaldi brought to the city. The book also visits a bookshop where acqua alta, or high water, flows in alongside the literature. This is not a conventional tourist guide but a helping hand showing that, beyond the few places flooded with tourists, Venice can be explored at a slower, freer pace, in the places one canal, campo, ciccheti or sotoportego away from where everyone else is looking.
