Description
Latvia, 1940. Just as Miriam Talan gives birth to her second child, the Soviets invade the Baltics and occupy Riga, Miriam's home. As a Jewish family, the Talans face immense injustice. First, they are stripped of everything by the Soviets, and soon the Nazis take power. Miriam fears for her newborn son and little daughter Ilana, so she asks her loyal Christian housekeeper to hide them and conceal their Jewish heritage until the atrocities come to an end. Chicago, 1975. Twenty-four-year-old Sarah Byrne mourns the sudden, premature death of her mother Ilana. Sarah's grandmother Miriam also attends the funeral, inadvertently opening the door to shocking family secrets. However, Sarah struggles in vain to establish a closer relationship with her grandmother and learn more about the family history. It is only when Miriam lies in the hospital, delirious with fever, that she asks Sarah to find her son, whom she once left behind in Latvia. Sarah embarks on a journey and begins her search. Yet the closer she gets to the truth, the more she realizes that her efforts may have catastrophic consequences. The Daughters of Occupation is a grand tale of the enduring devastation wrought by war and how, alongside trauma, an unyielding strength to face it together is passed down through generations.
