China during the Ming dynasty surpassed Europe in many ways, but in terms of women's status in society, it remained rigidly traditional. Regardless of family status, a woman was subordinate to a man from birth to death – in childhood to her father, in adulthood to her husband, and in old age to her son. Educating women was considered undesirable in 15th century China.
