There is something rotten in the state of Mississippi – and not just there. Mysterious murders of white people draw attention to the nondescript town of Prachy. And the two detectives who have come to investigate are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Against the backdrop of the investigation, a terrifying picture of racial violence emerges, spreading like blood across all the states of the former South for decades. A series of brutal murders is linked by the presence of another dead body – a man who closely resembles Emmett Till, a young Black boy lynched in the same town 65 years ago. It seems that the victims of lynchings are demanding the justice denied to them for years, albeit with little help from a local witch and her followers, and are giving the villains a taste of their own medicine. The novel Southern Trees Bear Strange Fruit by American author Percival Everett tackles the theme of America's Black conscience, with a hefty dose of dark humor, spiced with a touch of black magic. It presents pressing and still unresolved questions that continue to stir American society in an unconventional way.
