Description
World Reading for Schoolchildren is a series of richly illustrated, sensitively retold, and abridged works of world literature. Dick Sand is a cabin boy on the whaling ship Pilgrim, which carries passengers: the wife of the ship's owner, her son, and her cousin, an entomologist from New Zealand, to San Francisco. During their voyage, they encounter a whale that completely changes the fate of the ship: it puts it in the hands of a fifteen-year-old boy. He must face many problems, the crew has perished, and a criminal cook sabotages the compass, causing the ship to end up in Africa. There, they are all captured, the black passengers are sold into slavery, and the criminal cook demands a ransom for the wife and her son. The adventurous story full of twists only brings resolution at the very end.
