The academic literature has so far focused on Asperger's syndrome (AS) primarily in children – as if it disappears in adulthood. In reality, however, it can be easily recognized in many yet undiagnosed adults. AS may even be one of the most common but overlooked diagnoses. Asperger's syndrome represents an innate, surprisingly widespread difference in the arrangement of the human mind. A person with AS – paradoxically referred to in the book as 'our alien' – has been confronted from the beginning of their conscious life with a significant internal difference from the majority population. However, this difference is not outwardly apparent, is often not understood by those around them, let alone accepted. How to survive with this otherness – this is what the author sees as 'the fundamental conflict of a person with AS.' The possibilities for resolving this conflict are varied and often lead to very different personality expressions. The text naturally invites readers to reflect on themselves – easily leading to the realization that they have long known some 'aliens' from their surroundings.
