Description
The apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe remains a marginal issue in Europe. If you ask an average European about significant pilgrimage sites, almost without exception, they will start talking about Mecca. If they limit themselves to the realm of Christianity, they will likely mention Lourdes, Rome, Fatima, or perhaps even the Holy Land. Almost no one will mention Guadalupe in Mexico. The apparition of the Virgin Mary left an indelible mark on a simple Indian – a miraculous image capturing the scene of the apparition, including many elements of symbolism understandable specifically to the Indians. The result of this event was a spontaneous Christianization not only of Mexico but gradually of the entire South America. The Indians reconciled with the Spaniards, and the Spaniards learned to perceive the Indians as equals. The publication describes the history of the apparition up to contemporary research on the image and incorporates the event into the tumultuous history of the Mexican state.
