Description

Local railways, more precisely local or regional lines, emerged in the Czech lands primarily between 1880 and 1914. During this short period, an enormous number of predominantly short lines were built, bringing the railway to towns and areas that had previously been bypassed by this new mode of transport. A significant impetus for the development of local railways came from the laws on local railways, which provided builders with state support and technical relief. The total length of local railways eventually exceeded 4,500 km. The book "Our Local Railways" is a comprehensive overview of the construction and development of local railways in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. It provides not only basic information about all the railways, their origins, lengths, methods of construction, and possibly their demise, but also an informed look at the functioning of local railways in a broader context (financing, operational economics, most commonly used railway vehicles, etc.). The second edition of this popular and long-out-of-print publication is being released after more than twenty years and brings updated information regarding the current state of our local railway network.
