Description

Mythologies is one of the most significant works of the French literary theorist, philosopher, and semiotician Roland Barthes. The introductory part consists of a series of short and perhaps surprisingly entertaining, yet extraordinarily sophisticated reflections on certain contemporary aspects of consumer society (wrestling, astrology, recipes); the second part attempts to place these texts within a broader theoretical framework. It is remarkable, among other things, for being one of the first attempts to apply a semiological approach to specific cultural phenomena. Mythologies fundamentally contributed to the transformation of the French intellectual scene in the second half of the 20th century: they are one of the first manifestations of the emergence of a new way of thinking that distances itself from phenomenological and existentialist orientations (Sartre, Camus, Merleau-Ponty) in favor of structural and synchronic analysis of historical and contemporary phenomena (Foucault, Althusser, Derrida, etc.).
