Description
Ayn Rand in her novel The Fountainhead (1943) fully applied her original literary vision for the first time and outlined her own philosophical direction, which she later called Objectivism. The book achieved immediate commercial success upon its release and is now considered a classic. In 1949, the novel was adapted into a film starring Gary Cooper. The plot follows the career and love life of a young, brilliant architect who stands firmly by his principles and tirelessly faces the pressure of society trying to break him and force him into conformity. In the novel, Rand opens up a number of fundamental themes that she later elaborated on in essays in her book The Virtue of Selfishness (1964) or fictionally in her most famous work Atlas Shrugged (1957). Her aim is to show that the moral and correct sense of an individual's life is not herd mentality and self-sacrifice for the sake of others and society, but rather achieving one's own happiness based on independent thinking and pursuing one's rational interests.
