In this Czech-language book, American historian Chris Miller examines the chip industry and the technological revolution of the past seventy years, whose dizzying growth has no parallel among other technologies. Miller argues that the exponentially increasing power of computing helped the United States win the Cold War and secure its present military and economic dominance. Microchips are also essential to geopolitical ambitions, which is why China is devoting increasing attention to their development and manufacture. For a long time, the world’s most advanced logic chips could be produced by only one company in Taiwan, which Beijing is claiming with increasing assertiveness. Miller concludes that the coming geopolitical tensions, with consequences for the global economy, cannot be understood without considering the struggle to control production of the microscopic components that power the modern world.
