This book presents the most comprehensive natural-history monograph yet devoted to the Vltava, the Czech national river, and also includes chapters on its history. Dozens of important archaeological sites line the river, including settlements from the Early Bronze Age, Celtic oppida and early medieval settlements such as Prague, Levý Hradec and Mělník. Its natural features are equally surprising, as the Vltava forms a continuous profile through forests ranging from upland spruce stands and beech and oak woods to lowland floodplain forests. Yet the river itself has no natural character along its middle course, where several large dams have been built.
