Description
The content of the book consists of two essays that Glubb Pasha published in Blackwood's Magazine in 1976 and 1977. Based on his own experiences with the Arab world, he derives more general theses about the functioning of empires, social norms, and the direction of modern civilization. Glubb presents the thesis that empires of various times and cultures lasted for a very similar duration and went through the same developmental stages from the age of conquests through the expansion of trade and intellect to decadence and collapse. He points out the causes of each stage and argues that if we view our past solely through the narrow lens of national histories of the last few centuries, we will overlook the recurring patterns leading to the end of cultures and civilizations.
