Vlhošť - Hora v labyrintu skal – Adamovič Jiří (2022)

Vlhošť is a broad phonolite mountain situated between the sandstone gorges of Kokořínsko and the volcanic landscape of České středohoří. In its shadow, prehistoric settlements, agricultural centres and towns arose, while medieval castles were built and systems of fishponds established. This book presents two perspectives on Vlhošť by authors who have studied its surroundings for many years. Geologist Jiří Adamovič and architectural historian Kamil Podroužek guide readers through its geological development, the distinctive features of its sandstone relief and the history of settlement in the surrounding area. They focus on specific natural and human-made phenomena and place them within the wider context of Vlhošť and its surroundings. The second part, written by geologist and essayist Václav Cílek, uses this context to express his own understanding of the landscape, based on a broader natural-science foundation and marked by a surprising emphasis on its spirituality. The two parts offer different approaches to perceiving and interpreting the landscape, meeting and complementing one another in their presentation of a little-known corner of the Czech lands.
