Description

Throughout the existence of the Příbram uranium mines, about one hundred thousand workers passed through, and if we add family members and other professions to this number, more than a quarter of a million people were affected by the Příbram mines, including political prisoners. This book discusses the 'state within a state' that the mines, managed by Soviet experts and controlled by the state secret police, represented for decades. Nevertheless, many stories of mining honor and solidarity unfolded here. Many miners recalled the mines as the best years of their lives. Others, however, died from diseases caused by overwork, alcoholism, and radioactive exposure. The unusual living conditions and hard, dangerous work gave rise to many stories that range from miraculous blessings at the Holy Mountain to the suffering of political prisoners. Uranium Příbram is as much a geological object as it is a social phenomenon.
