Description

The "Nihilistic Comedy" Floating Opera, the debut of the famous American novelist John Barth, deals with an unusual love triangle and the destructive effect of an abnormally active intellect on one's own life and surroundings. Lawyer Todd Andrews lives alone in a hotel, indulges in expensive suits and whisky, smokes cigars, and enjoys an intimate friendship with his best friend's wife. He claims not to be a philosopher, yet he likes to apply his eccentric views to his own life and the lives of others, often with unhappy consequences. Through a thorough examination of the key events in his life in an effort to understand the reasons behind them, he comes to the conviction that there are no absolute values or rational causes, and life is governed only by a series of random incidents. As a result, one June morning in 1937, he decides to commit suicide, as life and death are equally unmotivated, and the reasons to live are therefore just as indefensible as the reasons to die.
