These cosmic grotesque stories, written in the 1960s, mark Italo Calvino’s definitive departure from traditional narrative methods as he explores new literary paths. Their starting points are not human stories but astrophysical and mathematical theories about the origin of the universe, physical and genetic discoveries, and philosophical speculation. They are conveyed by the protean narrator Qfwfq, who, in his endless transformations, represents the universe itself. At first concentrated in a point from which the cosmos emerges through the Big Bang, Qfwfq later travels through space as a cluster of atoms, becomes a mineral, takes part in the evolution of species and, at one stage, is even a dinosaur. He recalls the world’s history over billions of years, and his memories are remarkably varied and strange. This new Czech translation presents the complete edition of these cosmicomic stories for the first time; the contents are in Czech.
