In his latest book, Tom Holland paints a broad picture of Christianity as the most enduring and influential legacy of antiquity, upon which the entire Western world is built. He shows that key concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science, human equality, human rights, and even atheism have deep roots in Christianity—a peculiar belief that one of the many victims of crucifixion, a punishment meant for slaves, is to be worshipped as God. All these Western concepts share with Christianity the claim to universal validity, even though they are products of one very specific society. Holland's book explores why Christianity has had such a subversive and revolutionary nature from its ancient beginnings through the Middle Ages to the present day, and shows how this faith continues to profoundly shape many of our attitudes and instincts in today's increasingly skeptical society.
