Is it worthwhile to cooperate, and is trust in other people rational? Is man a homo economicus? How could human communication have originated? Does evolution necessarily produce selfish individuals? This theory emerged in the mid-20th century in the field of mathematics as a tool designed to help people navigate and make decisions in complex and especially conflicting situations. However, it soon found applications far beyond the boundaries of economics, which it initially focused on. Today, it penetrates sociology, political science, and other social sciences, evolutionary theory, and of course, philosophy. This book attempts to explain in an accessible, non-mathematical way what problems this theory can help clarify.
