Description
This Czech-language historical novel is set in the town of Trhový Štěpánov, which suffers under the rule of the sadistic Countess Marie Josefa of Trautson. Vít, the town executioner responsible for harsh punishments, finds himself in a difficult situation when his merciless profession displeases his beloved Juliana. Marie Josefa’s cruel reign reaches a climax when she orders all local inhabitants to bring butter to the church so that it can be used to keep an eternal light burning. Since disobedience is once again severely punished, Juliana leaves Vít. Unwilling to accept the loss of his love, the executioner disguises himself and sets out for the manor to punish the countess and free the town from her rule. But what happens when Vít’s heart turns against his original plan? Can he win Juliana’s love back, and can love change people’s lives in times of tyranny?
