Popovické máje a masopusty objektivem Vladimíra Kasla – Kasl Vladimír (2025)

Through captivating photographs found in the book by Vladimír Kasl, you are presented with a brief overview of the past ten years of the two largest cultural events in Popovice, Králův Dvůr. The Staročeské máje and the Masopust festivities have belonged to Popovice since time immemorial, but over time they fell into oblivion, just like other old Czech traditions of our ancestors. When the Staročeské máje were revived here in 2015, it meant a return to the traditions of our grandfathers and grandmothers. Photographer Vladimír Kasl patiently and sensitively documents this revived tradition and shares his perspective with readers in his current book.

POPOVICKÉ MÁJE: The Staročeské dry máje take place in Králův Dvůr – Popovice in June, and according to tradition, only married women dance here. It is a showcase of their skill and beautiful costumes. Preparations and rehearsals for entertaining choreographies and traditional Czech gatherings begin in March. The day before the máje, the local playground where the celebration takes place is prepared, tables and tents are set up. The májka is also decorated, which will rise in its beauty above Popovice.
