Description
Stolpersteine, also known in Czech as "Kameny zmizelých," are cobblestones with a brass surface embedded in the sidewalk in front of the homes of Holocaust victims and victims of the Nazi regime. These small square tiles, accompanied by text containing several details about the victim, come from the workshop of German artist Günter Demnig. He laid his first memorial stone on December 16, 1992, in front of the town hall in Cologne. Since then, tens of thousands have been installed across Europe... In 2023, the city of Beroun joined more than sixty Czech cities where Stolpersteine have been embedded in the pavement. Since then, twenty-six stones have already been laid in the city, primarily due to public interest. This current publication presents portraits and human stories of the Holocaust victims from Beroun for whom stones have already been laid. The book also provides a brief history of Jewish settlement in the Beroun area, presents a complete list and statistical data of local Holocaust victims, and, thanks to a map, can also serve as a clear guide to the Jewish history of Beroun.
