Description

This Czech-language volume is the third part of a series devoted to the American carrier-based Wildcat fighter and examines the service of US Navy aviation units equipped with the Grumman F4F-3 and F4F-3A in the Pacific during the opening phase of the war against Imperial Japan. On 7 December 1941, two such squadrons were serving there: VF-3, stationed aboard USS Saratoga (CV-3) with F4F-3 aircraft, and VF-6, operating from USS Enterprise (CV-6) and flying mainly F4F-3As. In January, VF-42 appeared in the Pacific aboard USS Yorktown (CV-5), again equipped with F4F-3s. Around the same time, VF-2, originally operating Brewster F2A-3 Buffalo aircraft from USS Lexington (CV-2), was also re-equipped with F4F-3As at Pearl Harbor. The men and machines of these units took part in numerous combat operations, initially exclusively defensive and, from February 1942 onward, increasingly offensive as American carrier aviation attacked advanced bases of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
