Description

Of the trio of modern twin-engine types that formed the basis of the Luftwaffe's bomber force in the second half of the 1930s, the Junkers Ju 86 undoubtedly became the least successful. Despite its modern appearance, the Ju 86 represented a certain compromise from a design perspective, straddling the line between tradition and new directions in aviation technology. However, the main reason for its relative failure was the parent company Junkers Flugzeugwerke AG's bet on an unusual propulsion system in the form of a pair of Junkers Jumo 205C diesel engines. Unfortunately, these units did not meet expectations in military service and caused a number of complications that led to the premature halt of serial production. The parent company attempted to save the Ju 86 situation by changing the power unit to classic air-cooled nine-cylinder radial engines BMW 132, but this did not save the design in the eyes of the top officials of the Reich Ministry of Aviation.
