Description
Portugal is located at the southwestern tip of Europe, washed by the Atlantic Ocean and warmed by the sun of the Mediterranean Sea. Today, Portugal has roughly the same population as the Czech Republic and only slightly larger territory. Yet for centuries, it has influenced our lives much more than larger and more powerful countries. The Portuguese gave the English not only afternoon tea but also Bombay, the key to their empire. They brought protection against malaria to Africa, slaves to America, higher education and curry and samosa to India, and tempura and firearms to Japan. And, by the way, it was again the Portuguese who advised the Chinese emperor before Marco Polo reached China. The Portuguese connected the world with their ships long before modern technology began to do so. Thus, the Portuguese created the first global village.
