Description
The short novel Frozen Hell was discovered in 2018 among the papers of John W. Campbell Jr., stored in the Harvard University library. It is an earlier, longer, and unpublished version of his famous short story "Who Goes There?", in which scientists at an Antarctic research station uncover a monstrous extraterrestrial being beneath the untouched ice sheet. As a result of several reckless actions, they allow the seemingly dead and harmless intruder to awaken. What follows is a thrilling and tense adventure, a struggle between humans and a creature that possesses an almost unimaginable ability to transform. The story belongs to the golden treasury of science fiction and is generally known primarily due to John Carpenter's film adaptation titled The Thing. Frozen Hell expands the published story by three chapters, providing a more vivid background and context to the tale, and is the version in which Campbell originally intended to present his story to readers. From this perspective, it is a remarkable literary artifact that should not escape the attention of any fan of classic science fiction.
