As soon as the doorbell rings, I suddenly just know that Dad is going to die today. I flinch and turn away from the chat monitor. I scan the table with my eyes, searching for his. But his face seems to have somehow tightened, there’s something sad and dejected in it that I’ve never seen before. At that moment, he realizes that I’m watching him and quickly changes his expression to a tired smile. But it’s too late. I get it. 'Maybe it’s just a courier with food,' he says quietly, even though he knows as well as I do that the person who brings us food never rings the bell. No one rings for us. Ever.
